What is a solar inverter?

A solar inverter is the electronic heart of your solar power system—a sophisticated device that converts the direct current (DC) electricity generated by your solar panels into the alternating current (AC) electricity that powers your home and feeds into the electrical grid. Do solar systems have inverters?

Almost any solar systems of any scale include an inverter of some type to allow the power to be used on site for AC-powered appliances or on the grid. Inverter cycles. During the 1st half cycle (top), DC current from a DC source - solar module or battery - is switched on through the top part of the primary coil. During the 2nd half cycle (bottom), the DC current is switched on through the bottom part of the coil. The simple two-cycle scheme shown in Figure 11.4 produces a square wave AC signal.
