Overview Battery energy storage systems (BESS) use rechargeable battery technology, normally lithium ion (Li-ion) to store energy. The energy is stored in chemical form and converted into electricity to meet electrical demand.
A BESS can also be used for energy arbitrage: e.g., generating low- cost solar power and then selling the excess to the grid to offset night-time purchases. To understand the main characteristics of the BESS system, a general overview of the whole battery system is shown in Figure 1.
Construction is expected to begin in spring 2025. When it is completed, it will be one of the largest BESS in Switzerland. According to Jan Baumann, Project Manager Energy & Grid Management at Primeo Energie, the system “will be used to compensate for weather-related fluctuations in the area's rapidly growing renewable electricity production.
The BESS is part of a network of power plants, consumers and batteries, it added. The large-scale BESS market in Switzerland has been relatively quiet with renewable penetration on the country's grid still relatively low. Axpo commissioned its BESS in February this year while utility Thurplus commissioned a 3MW system in September last year.
