Electricity generation by the U.S. electric power sector totaled about 4,260 billion kilowatthours (BkWh) in 2025. In our latest Short-Term Energy Outlook (STEO), we expect U.S. electricity generation will grow by 1.1% in 2026 and by 2.6% in 2027, when it reaches an annual total of 4,423 BkWh.
While the contribution of solar energy to global electricity production remains generally low at 3.6%, it has firmly established itself among other renewable energy technologies, comprising nearly 31% of the total installed renewable energy capacity in 2022 (IRENA, 2023).

Every day, the Earth gets about 174 petawatts of solar energy. By 2050, solar energy is expected to provide half (50%) of the world's electricity.
In 2016, as depicted in Fig. 1, renewables contributed to about 30% of the global installed capacity, providing nearly a quarter of global electricity production. The solar power (PV+CSP) accounted for nearly 8% of the renewable electricity production.
